The Ferrari 488 GTB and Spider of 2015 to 2019 replaced the 458 Italia with a twin-turbocharged 3.9-litre V8. This was Ferrari’s first turbocharged road car V8 since the F40. The 660bhp output represented a substantial increase over the 458, but the character of the engine divided opinion: the turbocharged V8’s power delivery, while impressive, could not replicate the 458’s flat-plane-crank naturally-aspirated acoustics. The 488 Pista took the turbocharged approach to its logical conclusion with 710bhp.
The Car
The 3,902cc twin-turbo V8 produced 660bhp at 8,000rpm with 760Nm of torque. The turbocharged engine required different packaging, with the turbochargers mounted low in the engine bay. Side air intakes replaced the 458’s smooth flanks. The Side Slip Control 2 system managed rear-end behaviour actively. The Spider used a two-piece folding aluminium hard roof that stowed under the rear deck. The 488 Challenge racing car used the same platform.
488 Challenge
The Ferrari 488 Challenge was produced for the Ferrari Challenge racing series that provides amateur and gentleman drivers with circuit racing in identical machinery. The 488 Challenge uses the same 488 GTB platform with race-specification roll cage, fire suppression, racing seats, and ABS that can be tuned for different circuits.
488 Pista
The Ferrari 488 Pista of 2018 to 2020 was the track-focused variant; 710bhp from the twin-turbocharged V8, 90kg lighter than the standard car, with titanium exhaust, carbon-fibre body panels, and aerodynamics generating 20% more downforce than the GTB. Pista means ‘track’ in Italian. This is Ferrari’s most extreme road-going sports car between the F40 and the current SF90 Stradale era.
Buying
The 488 Pista is the most desirable 488 version; 710bhp, lighter than the GTB, with titanium exhaust and increased downforce. The standard GTB offers the full 660bhp experience. Annual cam belt changes remain the maintenance requirement.
