The Ferrari 348 of 1989 to 1994 replaced the 328 with a new longitudinal transaxle layout (ie, the gearbox moved to behind the rear axle) and a 3,405cc V8 producing 300bhp. The 348 was criticised at launch for its handling: the rear was sensitive in a way that caught drivers out, leading to accidents and negative press. Ferrari addressed the issues progressively, and the final 348 Spider and Challenge variants are significantly better than the early cars.
The Car
The 348 used the same engine family as the Mondial t with the same 300bhp output, but in a more focused two-seat body by Pininfarina. The transversely mounted gearbox was replaced by a longitudinal layout (similar to the approach used in the Testarossa) which required a wider body than the 328. The tb and ts body styles (transversale berlinetta and targa spider) were the initial production cars; the Spider convertible with its properly folding roof arrived in 1994. The 348 Challenge racing variant is the most rewarding to drive.
Buying
Later 348s are better than early cars thanks to the suspension revisions which addressed the original handling sensitivity. The Spider is the most desirable road car specification. Cam belt changes are vital to a well-maintained example.
