Facel Vega
Facel Vega Price Guide
Facel Vega is a genuinely fascinating marque – a French coachbuilder turned manufacturer that briefly built some of the most glamorous grand tourers in the world before an ambitious but flawed expansion brought the whole enterprise down. If you own a Facel Vega, you own a rare and historically significant French car, but which model you have matters enormously to its value, because the marque’s story is really two very different stories.
What Affects Facel Vega Values
Model is the dominant factor, more so than with almost any other marque of this era, because Facel Vega’s two product lines occupy completely different positions in the collector market. The big, Chrysler V8-powered grand tourers (FV, FVS, Excellence, HK500, Facel II) are genuinely desirable classic cars with strong celebrity provenance and real presence; the smaller Facellia and its derivatives are interesting but carry the baggage of the unreliable engine that bankrupted the company. Originality, the condition of the distinctive Facel interior detailing, and documented history all matter as with any rare pre-war-adjacent French classic. With only around 2,900 cars built in total across the company’s entire decade of production, every surviving Facel Vega is scarce.
FV, FVS, HK500 and Excellence
The big Facel Vegas are the cars that built the marque’s reputation and remain the most desirable today. Powered by large Chrysler Hemi V8 engines in a tubular chassis, these were genuinely fast, glamorous grand tourers that attracted a roster of famous owners including Stirling Moss and Pablo Picasso. The HK500, with its 5.8-litre V8, is the most commonly encountered and most actively traded of the big Facels. The Excellence, a four-door pillarless saloon with rear-hinged back doors, is rarer and was the choice of heads of state and the wealthiest clients. These cars command serious prices at specialist French and international classic car auctions, and any example with documented celebrity ownership carries a significant premium.
Facel II
The Facel II, introduced in 1962 as the refined successor to the HK500, represents the high point of Facel Vega’s grand touring ambition and is considered by many to be among the most beautiful cars of the 1960s. With a 6.3-litre Chrysler V8 and genuinely luxurious appointments, it was a credible rival to Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz at the time. Production was limited and survivors are highly prized – the Facel II is the most valuable production Facel Vega and trades at the top of the marque’s value range.
Facellia, Facel III and Facel 6
The Facellia and its derivatives tell the cautionary side of the Facel Vega story. The original Facellia, powered by an unreliable in-house twin-cam four-cylinder engine, was responsible for the warranty claims that bankrupted the company. When fitted with the more dependable Volvo B18 engine, the car was renamed Facel III; the larger-engined Facel 6 used an Austin-Healey 3000 straight-six in a final attempt to save the company. These cars are rarer than the big Facels in good original condition, partly because so many were affected by the engine problems, and partly because total production was modest to begin with. Values are lower than the big V8 Facels, but a well-sorted Facellia or Facel III – particularly one that has had its mechanical issues properly addressed over the decades – represents an interesting and significantly more affordable way into Facel Vega ownership, and the design itself remains attractive and historically important.
