The third-generation Dodge Challenger of 2009 to 2023 is the longest production run of any American pony car. It is a retro-styled muscle coupe that deliberately referenced the 1970 original in its proportions and grew progressively more powerful with each model year. This bulking up culminated with the supercharged Redeye producing 797bhp. It was discontinued as Dodge transitioned to electric performance.

The Car

The modern Challenger used the same LX platform as the Charger with HEMI engines from 5.7 through 6.4-litre and the supercharged 6.2-litre Hellcat family. The retro styling was remarkably faithful to the 1970 original. The Challenger T/A and T/A 392 revived the Trans-Am name. The Demon variant (initially limited to drag strip use only) produced 840bhp with a 2.7-second 0–60mph time. The Final Edition models marked the end of production in 2023. Unlike the Charger, the Challenger offered a classic coupe two-door layout throughout.

Buying

The Hellcat is the definitive specification; rear-wheel drive, manual or automatic, 707bhp. The Demon is a collector’s item from launch. Depreciation from new prices makes the Hellcat one of the best value propositions in performance cars.
