The 1969–1972 Dodge Challenger arrived at the peak of the muscle car era and departed before the malaise set in. A pony car on the new E-body platform that was wider and longer than the Barracuda (which it shared its underpinnings with) offering the 440ci and 426ci Hemi in a body of genuine distinction. It caused a stir the automotive industry is still, in some ways, reeling from. The 1970 is the most celebrated year; the 1971 and 1972 are more affordable with nearly identical specification.

The Car

The Challenger used the E-body platform developed specifically for Chrysler’s pony cars, with the 318ci small-block as the entry engine and the 426ci Hemi at 425bhp as the performance peak. The T/A (Trans Am) variant used the 340ci six-pack triple-carburettor engine with a side-exit exhaust for Trans-Am racing homologation – this is one of the rarest and most desirable Challengers. The R/T designation marked the high-performance models. Only 1,070 Hemi Challengers were built in 1970.

Buying

Documented Hemi cars are museum-grade investments. The T/A is the driver’s classic with the smaller engine, more focused, and extraordinarily rare. The 440 R/T is the accessible performance choice. Authentication through Chrysler records is essential.
