The Dax 427 is one of the longest-established and most respected Cobra 427 replicas. It is an evocation of the AC Cobra using Ford V8 engines in a body that closely mirrors the original’s proportions. Where the Chesil recreates the Porsche 356 Speedster, the Dax 427 recreates the big-block American V8 roadster experience at a fraction of an authentic AC Cobra’s value.
The Car
The Dax 427 uses a purpose-designed tubular steel chassis with fibreglass body panels modelled on the AC Cobra 427’s proportions. Ford 302ci (5.0-litre) and 351ci (5.8-litre) Windsor V8 engines are the traditional choice, though some builders use Ford V8 engines of various displacements. The wide-body shell accommodates large American V8 engines and the wide slick or road-legal tyres of the original. Dax has been building 427s continuously since 1980, producing one of the most proven Cobra replica platforms available.
Buying
Buy a Dax-supplied car or professionally completed build over an amateur construction. Engine specification, build documentation, and IVA certification are the priorities. Values reflect the engine specification. A well-built 351ci Windsor car is a serious performance vehicle. The Dax club and specialist network are the resources.
