The Daimler Sovereign Series I, produced from 1969 to 1973, was the first Sovereign based on the landmark Jaguar XJ6 platform. It was a car that Motor magazine called “the finest saloon car in the world” when it launched. The Daimler version added the fluted grille, individual rear seats, and enhanced trim that Daimler buyers expected.
The Car
The Series I Sovereign used the Jaguar XJ6’s 2.8 or 4.2-litre straight-six in a body that incorporated independent rear suspension, all-round disc brakes, and a ride quality that redefined the executive saloon segment. The Daimler interior was subtly superior to the Jaguar equivalent with deeper pile carpets, individual rear seats replacing the bench, and additional veneer. A 12-cylinder version never materialised for the Series I.
Buying
The 4.2-litre is the engine to seek because the 2.8-litre was undergunned for the car’s size. Rust in the lower body and around the headlights is the primary concern. Electrical issues are common on all early XJ-based cars.
