Citroen ZX Price Guide

The Citroën ZX was Citroën’s normalisation moment. It was a conventional front-wheel-drive hatchback without hydropneumatic suspension, intended to compete directly with the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Escort on straightforward terms. It was competent, practical, and entirely lacking in Citroën’s traditional eccentricity. The Volcane and 16v performance variants are the models worth seeking.

The Car

The ZX launched in 1991 with conventional suspension, making it the first Citroën family car without any form of self-levelling for decades. The 16v 1.9-litre produced 150bhp and was a genuine hot hatch, finishing second in the 1991 Paris-Dakar rally in prototype form. The Volcane used the 2.0i in 123bhp form. A comprehensive estate body style extended the range’s practicality. The ZX was sold in the UK as a reliable, affordable family car and was generally so.

Buying

The 16v is the enthusiast’s ZX and is appreciating. The Volcane is the practical performance choice. The 1.9 diesel is the low-cost entry. Rust in the usual areas but not as severely as pre-1983 Citroëns.
