Citroen Xsara Price Guide
-
typical price 13 October, 2026
The Citroën Xsara replaced the ZX in the family hatchback segment. It was a more refined, better-equipped car that competed directly with the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. The VTS hot hatch version and the Xsara Picasso people carrier are the most interesting variants. The estate remains a practical used buy.
The Car
The Xsara launched in 1997 in hatchback, coupé, and estate body styles using engines from 1.4 to 2.0-litres. The VTS used the 167bhp 2.0 16v engine, turning it into a fast and capable option despite the conventional suspension. The 2.0 HDi diesel from 1999 was economical and torquey. The Xsara was reliable by Citroën’s previous standards, sharing PSA platform and drivetrain components that had been refined through multiple generations. Rallying success with Sébastien Loeb winning the 2002 World Rally Championship in a Xsara WRC.
Buying
The VTS is the performance choice. The 2.0 HDi estate is the practical daily driver. The Citroën Xsara is reliable and well-supported, it may be one of the least eccentric Citroëns but it is none the worse for it.
