The Citroën U23 was the workhorse truck of post-war France. A medium-duty goods vehicle that used Type H front-wheel-drive mechanicals in a conventional bonnetted truck layout. Less celebrated than the H van but equally important to French commerce, it was built from 1946 to 1965 in substantial numbers as a dairy, brewery, and municipal truck.
The Car
The U23 used the same basic drivetrain as the H van (front-wheel drive with the Citroën flat-twin engine) in a conventional forward-cab or bonneted truck body. The front-wheel-drive layout allowed a flat load floor at a height that facilitated loading. It was available as flatbed, box van, tipper, and various specialist configurations. The U23 is far rarer in the UK than the H van and of interest primarily to commercial vehicle historians.
Buying
Any surviving U23 is a rare commercial vehicle of historical interest. French specialist knowledge is required for parts and maintenance.
