The Citroën Méhari was a beach buggy and light utility vehicle built on 2CV mechanicals. Available as a two-door or four-door open body in ABS plastic that could be hosed down inside and out, driven on beaches and rough tracks, and repaired with minimal tools. It was the French military’s light reconnaissance vehicle and the holiday island taxi. It is one of the most joyous cars ever made.
The Car
Designed by Roland de la Poype and produced from 1968 to 1988, the Méhari used the 2CV6’s 602cc engine in a tubular-steel-framed body with ABS plastic panels that did not rust. Four-wheel drive was available from 1978 as the Méhari 4×4, using the Dyane’s drivetrain with an extra transfer box. The body came in a single colour per production run. The military ordered over 15,000 for the French Army. Around 144,000 Méharis were built.
Buying
The 4×4 is the rare and desirable specification. Standard Méharis are increasingly sought-after as their character becomes better appreciated. The ABS body does not rust but can become brittle with age so check for cracking around mounting points. The 2CV drivetrain provides comprehensive parts support.
