The Citroën DS5 was the most ambitious of the early DS models. It presented as a large premium hatchback but chucked in a coupé roofline, forward-thinking hybrid powertrain option, and an interior that mixed luxury materials with unusual design. It competed with the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 while never quite convincing buyers that it matched them.
The Car
The DS5 launched in 2012 with 1.6 THP 155 and 200bhp petrol, 2.0 HDi 160 and 165bhp diesel, and a plug-in hybrid combining a 2.0 HDi with an electric motor for 200bhp total. The hybrid offered genuine electric-only range and was the most technically advanced version. The interior used leather, chrome, and watch-style instrumentation to create a premium ambiance that was more successful than in any previous PSA product.
Buying
The 200bhp THP is the petrol performance choice. The 2.0 HDi 165 is the practical diesel. The hybrid is interesting but complex, specialist knowledge is required to maintain.
