The Citroën DS3 was the car that launched the DS brand. Initially badged as a Citroën and gradually repositioned as the beginning of a premium sub-brand, the DS3 used the first-generation C3 platform in a three-door body with enormous personalisation options and the THP turbocharged petrol that made it genuinely entertaining to drive.
The Car
Launched in 2010, the DS3 used 1.4, 1.6 VTi petrol and 1.4, 1.6 HDi diesel engines, with the 1.6 THP 150 and 207bhp Racing variant as the performance peaks. The Racing used the same engine as the Peugeot RCZ-R in a lighter body. Extensive roof and body colour combinations, the distinctive chrome A-pillar stripe, and the premium positioning differentiated it from the standard C3.
Buying
The 1.6 THP 150 is the driver’s DS3. The Racing is the enthusiast’s specification and values are rising accordingly after depreciation has bottomed out. The 1.6 HDi 90 is the economy choice. The Citroën DS3 has been repositioned under the DS brand but is mechanically a Citroën throughout.
