The Citroën C5 was the flagship family car that attempted to reintroduce Citroën’s hydropneumatic sophistication to the executive class. They used a revised Hydractive 3 system with electronically controlled damping alongside a range of petrol and diesel engines. The C5 was a genuinely excellent long-distance car that many feel never received the recognition it deserved.

The Car

The C5 launched in 2001 (second generation coming in 2008) with the Hydractive 3 suspension offering sport and comfort modes with computer-controlled damping. The 2.7 V6 HDi diesel was the outstanding powertrain; smooth, powerful, and economical. A saloon, estate, and estate tourer body covered the range. The C5’s ride quality on poor surfaces was among the best in the executive car class at any price. The second-generation 2008 car improved refinement further.

Buying

The 2.7 HDi estate of the second generation is the outstanding specification. Hydractive 3 sphere condition is the priority. Suspension electronics can fail on early cars. The Citroën C5 is dramatically underpriced relative to the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 it attempted to compete with when new.
