The Citroën C3 Pluriel was one of the most ambitious and least successful open-car experiments in recent automotive history. It was a small convertible that could transform between five distinct roof configurations, from closed coupe to full open. The roof mechanism was too complex, too prone to leaking, and too expensive to repair for the mass market.
The Car
The Pluriel used the first-generation C3’s platform with a body that could remove the B-pillars and roof completely, leaving a roll-bar open structure. The five configurations (coupe, cabriolet, convertible, roadster, and spider) required removing and stowing roof sections by hand. The 1.6 16v or 1.4 HDi engines were available. The concept was enthusiastically received at concept stage; the reality was less compelling.
Buying
The Pluriel is a curiosity. Roof seal condition is critical; a leaking Pluriel is an uncomfortable Pluriel. The 1.6 petrol is the engine to seek. Windscreen replacement has always been an eye-watering prospect, because of the glass’ structural rigidity. Values are very low in today’s market.
