The first-generation Citroën C1 was a joint project between PSA and Toyota. It is the same car as the Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo, built at the TPCA factory in Kolín, Czech Republic. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder was economical and the tiny dimensions made urban parking trivial. It is not a driving car; it is an urban appliance of considerable practicality.
The Car
The C1 launched in 2005 with a 998cc three-cylinder petrol engine producing 68bhp and optionally a 1.4-litre HDi diesel. The five-door was more practical than the three-door despite the C1’s minimal dimensions. An automated manual gearbox (Sensodrive) was available but this is best avoided due to its jerky low-speed behaviour. Insurance group 1 for young drivers was the marketing highlight. The three-cylinder sounds characterful at high revs.
Buying
The five-door 1.0 manual is the sensible C1. Avoid the Sensodrive automated gearbox. High-mileage examples are common so check for engine wear carefully.
