The first-generation Berlingo M49, launched in 1996, established the format that transformed the small van segment. The idea of a car-derived leisure activity vehicle, combining the practicality of a panel van with seating for five, was revolutionary. The Berlingo arrived simultaneously as a commercial van and a passenger Multispace, blurring the distinction between car and van in a way that spawned countless imitators.
The Car
The M49 Berlingo used the ZX/Saxo platform with 1.1, 1.4, and 1.8-litre petrol engines plus 1.9 D and 1.9 HDi diesels. The Multispace passenger variant offered sliding rear doors, high seating, and remarkable space efficiency in a short overall length. The van variant shared the same body with a bulkhead. The HDi diesel was the overwhelming sales choice; economical, torquey, and well-matched to the Berlingo’s character.
Buying
The 1.9 HDi is the sensible M49 specification. Rust affects the lower body and sliding door runners on older examples so check the sliding door mechanism carefully. The Citroën M49 Berlingo is straightforward to maintain and cheap to run.
