Citroen AX Price Guide

The Citroën AX was one of the lightest and most fuel-efficient cars of its era. A supermini so carefully engineered to minimise weight that the base models weighed under 700kg. The GT and Sport variants turned that low weight to performance advantage; the GTi with 100bhp in an 715kg car was a genuine pocket rocket.

The Car

Launched in 1987, the AX used TU-series four-cylinder engines from 954cc to 1,360cc. The GT used the 85bhp 1,360cc; the GTi the 100bhp version. The AX diesel was the most efficient car on sale in Europe at the time, returning over 80mpg in careful use. Conventional suspension throughout; none of the usual hydropneumatics. The AX’s weight advantage gave it performance and economy that heavier competitors could not match.

Buying

The GTi is the collector’s AX; values have been rising and we expect this trend to continue. The GT is the accessible performance buy. The diesel is the economy classic. The TU engine family is simple and well-supported. Rust affects the lower body and wheel arches.
