The classic Citroën Ami of 1961 to 1978 was the car that bridged the gap between the 2CV and the Dyane. It was a four-door saloon using 2CV mechanicals in a more conventional but deeply unusual body designed by Flaminio Bertoni with a characteristic reverse-rake rear window. It was eccentric, practical, and peculiarly charming – the recognisable Citroën recipe for success.

The Car

The original Ami 6 used the 602cc 2CV flat-twin in a body with reverse-rake rear glass that provided excellent rear headroom while the reverse-slope gave a formal appearance. The Ami 8 of 1969 replaced it with a more conventional three-box shape and the 602cc engine producing 32bhp. The Ami Super of 1973 used a 1,015cc GS engine. All Ami models used 2CV-derived drivetrain components.

Buying

The Ami 6 with its reverse-rake rear window is the collector’s choice. The Ami 8 is more practical. 2CV parts availability supports all mechanical components. Rust is the universal concern.
