The 1980s 2CV is the most refined and best-preserved generation. This is the era of the Charleston two-tone, the improved rust protection from 1981, and the growing awareness among buyers that the 2CV was becoming a classic rather than merely a cheap car. The final 2CV was built in July 1990 in Portugal.
The Car
The 1981 Charleston special edition in two-tone maroon-black or grey-black with diagonal hatching on the front valance became one of the most popular 2CV specifications and a significant collector’s car. Galvanised body panels were introduced progressively from 1981, dramatically improving corrosion resistance. The 2CV6 continued with the 29bhp 602cc engine. The Dolly and other special editions appeared through the decade. The Portuguese factory at Mangualde produced the final cars from 1988 to 1990; these late Portuguese cars are sometimes considered the best-built 2CVs.
Buying
The Charleston is the collector’s 1980s 2CV. Post-1981 cars with galvanised panels are structurally superior to earlier examples. The Portuguese final-year cars are the best-built. Buy on body condition above all as the mechanical components are interchangeable across the entire production run.
