The Chrysler Windsor was the mid-range Chrysler of the post-war era — above the entry-level models and below the New Yorker, offering a combination of Chrysler’s build quality and the Spitfire or Firepower V8 engines in a range of body styles that became increasingly dramatic through the 1950s as Exner’s Forward Look styling transformed American car design.
The Car
Produced from 1940 to 1961 (the dataset covers 1946–1957), the Windsor used the Spitfire inline-six through 1954, then received the new Firepower Hemi V8 from 1955. The 1955 Windsor with its 331ci Hemi was a significant performance step forward. The 1957 Windsor in Virgil Exner’s fully developed Forward Look styling — with its prominent tailfins, large glass areas, and dramatic colour schemes — is the most visually compelling Windsor and the most collected. The convertible and hardtop Sport Coupe are the most desirable body styles.
Buying
The 1955–1957 Windsor with the Hemi V8 and the full Forward Look styling is the collector’s specification. The Hemi engine is robust but requires correct tuning. Rust around the lower body and under chrome trim is the universal concern. The WPC Club provides comprehensive support. Chrysler
