The Chrysler Newport was the entry-level Chrysler of its era — launched as a Chrysler 300 sub-model and evolving into the base-model full-sized Chrysler from 1961 to 1981. For buyers who wanted a full-sized American car with Chrysler’s build quality at a lower price than the New Yorker, the Newport was the answer. The 440ci TNT V8 Newport convertible of the late 1960s offered more performance than its positioning suggested.
The Car
The dataset covers 1967–1976. The Newport used Chrysler’s B-body full-sized platform with the standard 383ci V8 and optional 440ci. The convertible was available through 1970. The two-door hardtop Sport Coupe was the most popular body style. By the early 1970s the Newport had adopted the federally mandated energy-absorbing bumpers that added weight and visual bulk. The 440ci Newport of 1968–1971 offers serious V8 performance at accessible prices.
Buying
The 440ci convertible of 1968–1970 is the performance and collector’s choice. The standard 383 cars are affordable full-sized American classics. Rust around the lower body and in the floor is the universal concern. Chrysler
