The Chevrolet SSR was a retro-styled convertible pickup truck. Pretty much a concept vehicle that reached production largely unchanged, combining 1950s Chevrolet truck styling cues with a power-operated retractable hardtop. From 2005, the madness levels increased as the LS2 V8 from the C6 Corvette, producing 390bhp., was added It was a commercial failure and a genuine automotive curiosity that has since become a modest collector’s piece.

The Car

Produced from 2003 to 2006, the SSR used the GMT360 platform from the TrailBlazer SUV in a two-seat convertible pickup body that referenced the 1947–1955 Advance Design Chevrolet trucks. The 2003–2004 SSR used a 300bhp 5.3-litre V8; the 2005–2006 received the LS2 6.0-litre at 390bhp and a six-speed manual gearbox option. This was the first manual SSR and significantly more entertaining. Just 24,117 were built across the full run.

Buying

The 2005–2006 LS2 cars with the manual gearbox are the specification to seek. The retractable roof mechanism requires maintenance. Low production numbers mean survivors are increasingly uncommon. The Chevrolet specialist community supports the LS2 drivetrain comprehensively.
