The Chevrolet El Camino is the definitive coupé utility; a car-based pickup using passenger car styling and mechanicals to produce a vehicle that looked like a muscle car, drove like a muscle car, and happened to have a load bed where the boot should be. It was revived in 1964 after a two-year gap and ran until 1987, producing some of the most visually successful American vehicles of the muscle car era.

The Car

The El Camino used the A-body platform shared with the Chevelle from 1964, which meant access to the same V8 engine range including the SS 454 at the performance peak. The SS package was available through the muscle car era with the full range of Chevelle performance engines. The 1968–1972 SS 454 El Camino is the most desirable collector’s specification. From 1973, emissions regulations progressively reduced output; the El Camino continued as a handsome but less potent vehicle until its 1987 discontinuation.

Buying

The SS 454 1968–1972 is the muscle era peak. The 1987 final year cars are unusual and collectable for their rarity. Load bed condition is as important as body condition.
