The Corvette C4 of 1984 to 1996 was a complete ground-up redesign that transformed the Corvette from a 1960s-derived design into a modern performance car. The ZR-1 variant with its Lotus-engineered LT5 V8 producing 375 (later 405bhp) was briefly the fastest production car in the world. The base LT1 cars offer excellent performance at very accessible prices.
The Car
The C4 introduced digital instrumentation, a new backbone chassis, and the Tuned Port Injection L83 V8 before the superior LT1 5.7-litre arrived in 1992. The ZR-1 of 1990–1995 used the DOHC LT5 engine co-developed with Lotus Engineering, producing 375bhp initially and 405bhp from 1993. The convertible returned for 1986. The 1996 Grand Sport limited edition was the final C4 and only 1,000 were produced, each in Admiral Blue with white stripes.
Buying
The ZR-1 is the performance investment; values are climbing. The LT1 coupe and convertible offer strong performance at low cost. Early L83 cars have less power but lower prices. The C5 that followed in 1997 was a significant refinement.
