The Rounded Line C/K of 1973 to 1991 was the longest-running C/K generation and the one that transformed the American pickup from working vehicle to lifestyle statement. The Silverado package from 1975 offered near-car-level interior quality; by the late 1980s, the Rounded Line had become the best-selling vehicle in America.
The Car
The 1973 redesign added a square cab with more interior space, energy-absorbing bumpers, and the Silverado trim that would eventually become its own nameplate. Small-block 350ci and big-block 454ci V8 engines were available throughout. The Scottsdale and Silverado interior packages progressively elevated comfort levels. Diesel options arrived from 1981 with the Detroit Diesel and later the 6.2-litre GM diesel. The 1981 refresh was the last major body update.
Buying
The Silverado 454 is the performance choice. Frame and floor rust are universal concerns. The 350ci small-block is inexpensive to rebuild and parts are everywhere. The GMT400 arrived for 1988.
