The Chevrolet Astro was a rear-wheel-drive minivan, an unusual configuration for the class. Its unusual layout gave it a towing capacity and load-carrying ability unavailable from the front-wheel-drive competitors that came to dominate the minivan segment. Produced from 1985 to 2005, it was the last American rear-wheel-drive minivan and found a loyal following among buyers who needed its commercial capabilities.
The Car
The Astro used the S-10 truck’s platform with a rear-wheel-drive layout and the 4.3-litre Vortec V6 as the standard engine. All-wheel drive was available. Seven-seat capacity with removable rear seats. The extended-body version provided additional cargo length. The Astro’s rear-wheel drive and optional AWD made it the choice for buyers needing towing capability; something the Chrysler minivans and Honda Odyssey could not provide.
Buying
The AWD models are the most capable and most collected. Rust attacks the lower body and rear wheel arches. The Vortec V6 is durable and well-supported. A low-mileage AWD Astro in good condition is surprisingly practical.
