Caterham Price Guide
Caterham is one of the few car manufacturers where the question of what your car is worth is closely tied to how it was originally specified and how well it has been maintained rather than simply how old it is. A well-kept Caterham from twenty years ago can be worth more than a neglected recent example, because these are cars that reward care and penalise neglect in equal measure.
What Affects Caterham Values
Engine specification is the primary variable. The range spans from the entry-level Ford Sigma and Duratec units through to the supercharged Roadsport and the Honda-engined 620R, and the performance hierarchy maps closely onto the value hierarchy. Cars with higher-specification engines, factory build (as opposed to self-build), and a clear service history will always achieve stronger prices. The condition of the bodywork, the integrity of the spaceframe, and the correctness of the suspension setup also matter to knowledgeable buyers. Self-build kits are a significant part of the Caterham market; a professionally finished self-build is fine, but a poorly assembled one will trade at a meaningful discount.
Classic Sevens
Earlier Caterhams (particularly the pre-2000 cars with De Dion rear suspension and twin-cam or BDR engines) have developed a genuine collector following and values have been rising. The Super Seven and early HPC are the most sought-after of the pre-millennium cars. Any car with a motorsport history or a significant competition record adds value rather than detracting from it, as these are cars built to be driven hard.
Modern Caterhams
The current range from the 170 through to the 620R represents the accessible end of the single-seater and track day market. Depreciation on new Caterhams is relatively modest given the long waiting lists for new cars, and a well-maintained used example represents excellent value against the cost of buying new. The 420R and 620R in particular hold their values strongly. The R300 and R400 occupy the sweet spot of the range for most buyers; fast enough to be genuinely exciting, practical enough for road use in good weather, and well supported by a large and knowledgeable community.
