The 1987–1990 Cadillac Fleetwood was a deliberate act of conservatism in an era of front-wheel-drive transition. Cadillac delivered a rear-wheel-drive, body-on-frame saloon using the D-body platform that Cadillac had maintained specifically for buyers who refused to accept the front-wheel-drive alternative. It was the right decision: these cars found a devoted following and their successors remained in production until 1996.

The Car

The 1987 Fleetwood used the D-body on a separate frame with rear-wheel drive and the 4.1-litre HT4100 engine. Unfortunately, this is the exact same troubled unit that damaged Cadillac’s reputation in the DeVille. From 1988, the more reliable 5.0-litre V8 replaced it. The Brougham trim level added formal opera windows, coach lamps, and a padded vinyl roof. These cars drove as large American saloons of the era should: softly, quietly, and with the sense that the outside world was very far away.

Buying

Avoid the 1987 HT4100 cars. The 1988–1990 with the 5.0-litre are substantially more reliable. Low-mileage examples with service history are the specification to pursue.
