The 1992–1993 Eldorado represented a genuine turning point with the arrival of the Northstar V8. This gave Cadillac’s personal luxury coupe an engine that finally matched its pretensions. The Northstar’s 270bhp and sophisticated DOHC architecture were a world away from the troubled four-cylinder and HT4100 units that had damaged Cadillac’s reputation through the 1980s.
The Car
The twelfth-generation Eldorado launched in 1992 with new sheet metal on the existing front-wheel-drive E-body platform. The Northstar 4.6-litre DOHC V8 produced 270bhp in Eldorado specification, the same engine as the Seville STS. The Touring Coupe specification added firmer suspension and unique wheels for a more driver-focused character. The 1993 model was the first year with the Northstar across the full Eldorado range.
Buying
The Northstar engine requires attention to head bolt integrity; a known failure point that can be addressed preventively. The Touring Coupe is the driver’s specification.
