The E89 Z4, produced from 2009 to 2016, replaced the soft-top with an electrically operated retractable hardtop. This provided near-coupe refinement when closed and genuine open-air motoring when open. The roof opening mechanism completed in nineteen seconds at speeds up to 40km/h.

The Car

The E89 used N52 and N54/N55 straight-sixes from 18i through 35is. The 35i with the N54 produced 306bhp; the 35is raised this to 340bhp with upgraded turbos and a twin-scroll setup. The sDrive35is is the definitive E89, the last hurrah of the N54 in the Z4 before it was replaced by the G29. An M Sport Package brought Adaptive M suspension and specific wheels without the full M treatment.

Buying

The 35is is the outstanding E89 specification. The retractable hardtop mechanism is generally reliable but requires lubrication and seal maintenance. N54 charge pipe failures apply.
