The E71 X6, produced from 2008 to 2014, was the original coupe-SUV. A car that the automotive press widely predicted would fail but that sold so well BMW had to increase production capacity. It used the E70 X5 platform with a dramatically raked rear roofline.
The Car
The E71 used N52/N54/N55 straight-sixes in the 35i and N63 V8 in the 50i at 407bhp. The xDrive50i is the desirable specification. The Dynamic Performance Control system (dividing torque between the rear wheels independently) was standard on the 50i and transformed the X6’s handling dynamics for an SUV. No diesel was offered in the initial lineup; the 30d and 40d arrived from 2009.
Buying
The 30d or 40d diesel is the practical recommendation. The 50i V8 for performance. Dynamic Performance Control should be checked for correct operation. The BMW E71 X6 is now very affordable, making it the original statement SUV at accessible prices.
