The E84 X1, produced from 2009 to 2015, was the first X1 and the last small BMW SUV with rear-wheel drive. It was built on a shortened version of the E90 3 Series platform that gave it handling dynamics no subsequent X1 could match.

The Car

The E84 used N20 four-cylinders and N52/N55 straight-sixes from 18i through 28i, plus N47 diesels. The sDrive (rear-wheel drive) and xDrive (all-wheel drive) variants were both offered. The xDrive 28i with the straight-six is the desirable specification. The body was compact by SUV standards, closer to a raised estate than a true off-roader really.

Buying

The sDrive 18d or 20d is the practical diesel choice. The xDrive 28i is the driver’s pick. N20 timing chain concerns apply. The BMW E84 X1 is the purist’s choice in the X1 range; the one that still drove like a BMW rather than a generic crossover.
