The G82 M4 coupe and G83 convertible, launched in 2020, used the S58 twin-turbo at 480bhp standard and 510bhp Competition. We got more power, more sophisticated chassis electronics, and the most controversial front end BMW had produced since the E65 7 Series. The car beneath the grille, whatever your opinion of that, is outstanding.

The Car

The S58B30 produces 480bhp standard and 510bhp Competition through a six-speed manual or eight-speed M DCT. The Competition xDrive adds all-wheel drive. The M4 CSL (550bhp, 100kg lighter than the Competition, carbon-ceramic brakes standard, rear seats deleted) is the ultimate G82 at launch price of around £140,000. The G83 convertible uses a fabric roof. Active M differential and M-specific adaptive dampers throughout.

Buying

The manual Competition is the specification to seek. The CSL is already appreciating from new prices. The S58 requires the same oil change discipline as all S-series engines; 6,000-mile maximum intervals. The BMW G82 M4 in Competition xDrive form offers the broadest capability envelope of the generation, while the rear-wheel drive manual remains the purer driving experience.
