The E46 M3, produced from 2000 to 2006, is by near-universal agreement the finest M3 ever made. The naturally aspirated S54 straight-six at 343bhp, the perfect body balance, the communicative steering, and the 8,000rpm redline that rewards commitment: no subsequent M3 has matched the E46 on terms that matter to drivers.
The Car
The S54B32 3.2-litre produced 343bhp at 7,900rpm with individual throttle bodies and variable valve timing. Available as coupe and convertible only; no saloon sullied the E36 M3. The SMG II paddle-shift gearbox is best avoided; the six-speed manual is the only correct transmission. The CSL homologation special added carbon-fibre panels, removed the rear seats and sound deadening, and used a 3.2-litre S54 in 360bhp form with the SMG. Just 1,383 CSLs were officially imported to the UK.
What Goes Wrong
Rod bearing failure is the S54’s defining concern. This is the same issue that affects the S65 V8 in the E90 M3. Oil changes at no more than 6,000 miles with BMW 10W-60 are essential. VANOS rattle on cold starts indicates seal wear; a known issue and well-understood repair. The subframe concerns of the standard E46 apply doubly to the M3 given the additional stress of M driving. The SMG hydraulic pump can fail.
Buying
A manual-gearbox E46 M3 coupe in a desirable colour with documented rod bearing attention and subframe repair is the specification to pursue. The CSL is a museum piece. The BMW E46 M3 has been appreciating for a decade so good examples are now expensive.
