The BMW i4 is the electric 4 Series Gran Coupe; a fully electric four-door fastback stuck on the CLAR platform. It brings the 3 Series/4 Series driving experience to zero-emission motoring. It is the most driver-focused electric BMW, and in M50 form with 544bhp, one of the most capable performance saloons in the market regardless of powertrain.
The Car
Launched in 2022, the i4 uses an 80.7kWh battery in the eDrive40 single-motor rear-wheel drive variant producing 340bhp, and the M50 with twin motors and all-wheel drive at 544bhp. The eDrive40 offers around 365 miles of WLTP range; the M50 around 318 miles. The 200kW DC charging capability adds 100 miles in approximately 31 minutes. The interior is shared with the combustion 4 Series Gran Coupe, with the addition of BMW’s curved display.
Buying
The eDrive40 is the range and efficiency choice. The M50 is the performance specification; genuinely engaging to drive, with the rear-biased torque distribution giving it a BMW character that distinguishes it from most electric performance cars.
The BMW i4, like most electric vehicles in the UK, has depreciated sharply from new, making used examples strong value. Battery degradation on well-maintained examples has, anecdotally, been minimal.
