The E63 6 Series coupe and E64 convertible, produced from 2003 to 2010, revived the nameplate after fifteen years. It ushered in a new era of V8 and V10 power, Chris Bangle’s controversial styling, and the SMG robotised manual that attracted consistent criticism but pointed toward the dual-clutch gearboxes that followed.
The Car
The E63/E64 used the N62 4.4-litre V8 in the 645Ci producing 333bhp and the N62 4.8-litre in the 650i at 367bhp. The iDrive controller received the same criticism as in the E60 5 Series. The E64 convertible used a folding metal roof.
Buying
The 650i with the ZF six-speed automatic is the sensible E63. N62 Valvetronic motor failures affect 645Ci/650i, so be sure to check for rough idle. The BMW E64 convertible is the more desirable body style for most buyers.
