The BMW 502 was the 501’s more powerful sibling fitted with a 2,580cc aluminium V8 engine. This made it the first German post-war car to use a V8. The 502 offered genuine performance, rare in European cars of the early 1950s and remains a significant piece of German automotive history.

The Car

Produced from 1954 to 1964, the 502 used an all-aluminium V8 of 2,580cc producing 100bhp initially, enlarged to 3,168cc producing 140bhp in the 3.2 Super version. The aluminium construction was progressive for the era. The 502 3.2 Super of 1957 was among the fastest four-door saloons available in Germany. The shared body with the 501 meant the V8 engine provided a significant performance advantage in an otherwise unchanged package.

Today

The 502 3.2 Super is the most desirable of the so-called Baroque Angels. Values have appreciated as collectors recognise the significance of the aluminium V8. BMW Classic division support and the BMW Historic Club are the resources for any purchase. Bodywork and mechanical restoration requires marque-specific specialist knowledge.
