The F36 Gran Coupe, produced from 2014 to 2021, added four doors and a practical hatchback to the F32 4 Series. It was the Gran Coupe that most buyers actually wanted; more versatile than the coupe, more attractive than the 3 Series saloon, and at a price that reflected only a modest premium over the two-door versions.

The Car

The F36 shared its mechanical specification entirely with the F30 3 Series and F32 4 Series. The very same engine range from 420i through 440i, the same xDrive option, and the same chassis. The fastback body added rear headroom absent in the coupe and a hatchback tailgate providing access to 480 litres of boot space. No M4 Gran Coupe was offered on this generation.

Buying

The 440i is the performance specification. The 420d is the economical daily. N20 timing chain concerns apply as on all F-series four-cylinders. The BMW F36 Gran Coupe represents strong used value in today’s used market.
