The BMW 2000 was the top-specification model in the Neue Klasse range that saved BMW from bankruptcy in the 1960s. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder in a compact two-door or four-door body, it gave buyers genuine performance combined with the handling balance that would define BMW’s character for the next half century.

The Car

Produced from 1966 to 1972, the 2000 used a 1,990cc overhead-cam four-cylinder producing 100bhp in standard form. The 2000ti used twin Solex carburettors for 120bhp; the 2000tii with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection produced 130bhp. The four-door saloon and a striking coupe (the 2000C and 2000CS styled by Wilhelm Hofmeister) were both offered. The Neue Klasse BMWs are the direct ancestors of every 3 Series that followed.

Buying

The tii fuel-injected variant is the most desirable. Rust is the primary concern on all Neue Klasse cars — these predate significant anti-corrosion measures. The BMW Club and specialist restorers provide good support. The 2002 is more widely known but the 2000 offers more body style variety.
