The F40 1 Series, launched in 2019, switched to front-wheel drive on the UKL platform shared with the MINI Clubman and X1. This was a decision that generated significant controversy among BMW enthusiasts. It is, objectively, the better car for most buyers: larger interior, more practical, more fuel-efficient. It is also no longer the driver’s car its predecessors were.
The Car
The F40 uses 1.5-litre three-cylinder and 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines across 116i through 120i petrol variants and 116d, 118d diesel options. The M135i xDrive uses a 306bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder with all-wheel drive. The five-door body is the only option. Interior quality took a significant step forward over the F20. A mild-hybrid system is available on some variants.
Buying
Buy the M135i if performance matters; the 118d if economy does. The absence of rear-wheel drive makes the F40 the default recommendation for buyers who simply need a premium small car, but not for those who chose the 1 Series specifically for its driving dynamics. The BMW F40 is better supported than its predecessors by driver assistance systems and connectivity.
