BMW 1 Series Generation / Variant Price Guides

The BMW 1 Series brought rear-wheel drive to the premium supermini class (the only car in its segment to offer it) and built a following among driving enthusiasts who found the front-wheel drive alternatives fundamentally lacking. Four generations have tracked BMW’s evolving philosophy, with the controversial switch to front-wheel drive on the F40 dividing opinion sharply.

The Range

The E87 launched in 2004 as a five-door hatchback with rear-wheel drive and a range of four and six-cylinder engines. The E82 coupe and E88 convertible followed. The F20 continued with rear-wheel drive and improved engines. The F40 switched to front-wheel drive on the UKL platform in 2019. The current F70 continues the front-wheel drive architecture.

Buying

The E87 and F20 rear-wheel drive cars are the ones enthusiasts value. The F40 is the more practical daily driver. All generations are well-supported by the BMW specialist network.
