The Bentley S2 introduced the engine that would power Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars for the next four decades: a 6,230cc aluminium V8 designed by Jack Phillips that was as smooth and as silent as anything in the world at the time of its introduction in 1959. The S2 is, for many, the S-Series Bentley to have.

The Car

Produced from 1959 to 1962, the S2 used the new V8 with twin SU carburettors and automatic transmission only; no manual gearbox was offered with the V8. The body was largely carried over from the S1 with minor revisions. Around 1,860 were built. The V8’s iron-fisted power delivery and near-total mechanical silence set a new standard for the class. The S2 Continental used the same engine in lighter, lower coachbuilt bodies.

Buying

The V8 is the engine that made the post-war Bentley legend. On a properly maintained S2 it is remarkably smooth and effortless. The cooling system requires attention on any V8 Bentley of this era. Bentley‘s heritage division and the Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists have comprehensive knowledge of the V8.
