The Bentley Bentayga was the car that sceptics predicted would ruin the brand and optimists hoped would save it. Both were wrong: the Bentayga is simply the most refined large SUV available, combining Bentley’s genuine craftwork and material quality with the raised driving position that increasingly defines how expensive cars are bought. It arrived in 2015 and immediately became Bentley’s best-selling model.
The Range
The Bentayga launched with the 6.0-litre W12 producing 600bhp, making it the fastest SUV in the world at the time. A 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 arrived in 2018, followed by a plug-in hybrid, a 4.0-litre diesel (briefly), and the Bentayga Speed with 626bhp. A 2021 facelift revised the exterior styling significantly, aligning it with the Continental GT third generation’s face. The Bentayga EWB (Extended Wheelbase) arrived in 2022 with active rear-wheel steering and a longer cabin.
What Goes Wrong
The W12 runs hot and requires strict oil change intervals. The 48V active roll system on some specifications needs specialist attention when it develops faults. Infotainment software on early cars is dated by current standards. Air suspension leak inspection is important on higher-mileage examples. The V8 is the more reliable powertrain for everyday use.
Buying
The V8 is the better daily proposition; more economical, more reliable, and by most assessments the more dynamically balanced car. The W12 Speed is for those who need the ultimate. Pre-facelift cars offer the deepest depreciation. The EWB offers the most comfortable rear passenger experience of any production vehicle.
