The Bedford TK was the workhorse of British haulage from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s. It was the truck you saw on every building site, every quarry, and every high street delivery round. As ubiquitous in commercial use as the Ford Transit would become in the van market.
The Vehicle
Produced from 1959 to 1986, the TK used Bedford’s own petrol and diesel engines in a conventional forward-control cab-over layout. Available in gross vehicle weights from 3.5 to 16 tonnes, the TK could be configured as a flat-bed, tipper, box van, tanker, or chassis for specialist bodywork. The cab was designed by David Bache (who later styled the Range Rover). Over 250,000 were built. The TK’s reliability and simplicity made it the default choice for small and medium haulage operators.
Today
The TK has a devoted following among vintage commercial vehicle enthusiasts. Tippers and flat-beds are the most common survivors. The TJ was the lighter-duty counterpart that served the smaller end of the commercial vehicle market.
