The Bedford CF was one of the most popular light commercial vehicles in Britain throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. It was the van that builders, plumbers, and delivery drivers relied on…and when the weekend came, the same van became a camper, a mobile workshop or, most important of all, an ice-cream van.
The Vehicle
Produced from 1969 to 1987, the CF used Vauxhall petrol engines (1.6, 1.8, 2.0, and 2.3-litre) and later Perkins and Bedford diesel units. Front-engine, rear-wheel drive with a conventional ladder chassis. Available as a panel van, chassis cab, minibus, and the basis for countless campervan conversions. The CF2, a facelifted version from 1984, brought minor improvements. Over 400,000 were built. The CF was popular with campervan converters including Autosleeper, Devon, and Holdsworth.
Buying
Rust is the primary enemy. The chassis rots from the inside, and the cab floor corrodes around the pedal box. Campervan conversions command premiums over plain panel vans. The Vauxhall engines are well-supported through the mainstream parts network.
