The Austin 12 was produced from 1921 to 1935 across several series, occupying the space above the 7 and 10 in Austin’s pre-war range. It was a solid, respectable family car that served middle-class Britain reliably through the inter-war period.
The Car
Various body styles were offered including saloons, tourers, and commercial variants. The engine was a four-cylinder side-valve unit producing modest power. The 12/4 designation indicated four cylinders; a 12/6 six-cylinder was also offered briefly. The Heavy 12/4 of the early 1930s was a particularly robust variant. Like most pre-war Austins, the body uses steel or aluminium panels over a wooden frame on a separate steel chassis.
Buying
The Austin 12 is a practical and relatively affordable pre-war classic. The pre-war Austin club network provides strong parts and knowledge support. Timber frame condition is critical on any car of this era.
