The Austin Big 7 was introduced in 1937 as a slightly larger, more refined evolution of the 7. It used a 900cc engine in a body that was wider and more comfortable than the tiny Seven, aimed at buyers who wanted something a bit more substantial without stepping up to the Austin 10.
The Car
The Big 7 was essentially an answer to the criticism that the Seven had become too small for a motoring public that was growing more affluent and (quite literally) physically larger. The result was a car that retained the Seven’s mechanical simplicity but offered more elbow room. Production was cut short by the outbreak of war in 1939. Around 12,000 were built. The Big 7 was succeeded post-war by the A40 range.
Buying
Rarer than the standard Seven, the Big 7 appeals to collectors who want pre-war Austin motoring with a modicum of extra comfort. The pre-war Austin club network supports the car well.
