The Austin A90 Atlantic was designed specifically for the American market; a flamboyant convertible with a 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine, electrically operated hood, and chrome-laden styling that was intended to compete with American domestic production. It failed spectacularly in the US but has aged into a charming and distinctive classic.

The Car

Produced from 1949 to 1952, the Atlantic used the 2,660cc Austin four-cylinder producing 88bhp, a substantial output for a British car of the period. The electrically operated hood was advanced for the era. In 1949, an Atlantic set 63 stock car records at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, averaging 70.5mph for 24 hours. Around 8,000 were built, with the majority destined for North America where they proved too expensive relative to the domestic competition.

Buying

The Atlantic is rare and increasingly sought after by collectors who appreciate its distinctive styling and American-market ambitions. The A40 Devon from the same era was the more modest domestic offering; the Atlantic was Austin’s attempt to reach for the stars.
