The Austin A30 was the small car that filled the gap left by the 7; a modern, unitary-construction saloon with an 803cc A-series engine that would go on to become one of the most important engine families in British motoring history.
The Car
Produced from 1952 to 1956, the A30 introduced the A-series overhead-valve engine that would power the Mini, MG Midget, Austin-Healey Sprite, and countless other BMC products for the next four decades. The A30 was small, economical, and charming in an understated way. Around 223,000 were built in two-door and four-door forms, plus van and pick-up variants. The A30 was succeeded by the A35, which used a larger 948cc version of the same engine.
Buying
The A30 is the originator of the A-series dynasty. It has a devoted following. The earlier 803cc engine is slightly less well-supported than the 948cc A35 unit, but parts are available. Rust is the primary concern. The two-door is the sportier-looking car; the van has its own following.
